Hi Guys

I'm coming over to florida from the uk in october and I was wondering if anyone knows what thickness backer rod to buy.
Also does anyone know if I would be able to pick some up in black in the orlando area, say at home depot or somewhere like that.

Many thanks for any help.

Cheers

Welcome Phil!

The home improvement stores only sell sizes of backer rod up to 5/8".

Online, you can find dark grey(not black) at loghomes.com and doitbest.com in larger sizes. 1" is usually the best size to go with.

Definitely 1" is what you'll want black sometimes called grey.
Doitbest.com dies have it in black I've made over 1400 dreads with that stuff.here is a link to it. Maybe you could order it and have it sent to someone near your destination. Of couse you'll still need to use a heat gun to shape the sections after you cut them to length and trim the end to a point. Any other questions just give a shout.doitbest.com/DoItBest/Main.aspx?PageID=64&SKU=772828

I found when I tapered only half way up a backer rod dread, that they stayed stiff. But when I tapered right from the thick end all the way down to the tips, they were less stiff and moved way better. Fyi.
