Backer Rod

To all who are looking for Backer Rod.... I use the stuff every day for work. I do Commercial Skylights for malls, hotels, office buildings etc. and we use it to fill gaps when we caulk and wet-seal the units. I use and can get any size, type, density, color, etc out there. I have at least five suppliers of the stuff so, if you need help let me know. Not sure if they ship internationally but, if you guys wanna pay the shipping I can pack up some and get it to you. Just remember, I travel with work so getting it quickly can become an issue. I will help if I can guys.

Plast-i-dip in a spray can, that works great. Spray it on, it bends, streches and does not flake. I did a sample backer rod sprayed with it, i'll post some pics tonite. They also sell it in a dip can. Thought about puoring it in a larger container and diping the backer rod in it. Might do that this weekend. I'll get some samples of the backer rod I have and take some pics and post em up. Anybody done this?

Here are some pics of some of the backer rod I have. I did a test piece of some 5/8 sprayed with black pasti-dip and it came out pretty good. Only three coats and the backer slicked out preety good. Four to five coats and the should look real dready like. I can get up to 1 1/4" backer. Gonaa order some 1" and 1 1/4" today or tommorrow. Hope this helps.

I agree that the Plasti-dip spray is great for coloring the backer rod dreads. The clear Plasti-dip works great for sealing the paint as well.

No plasti-dip but you could try clear coat paint, or that plasti-kote stuff. You can get that in the U.K. Seen some on ebay and I googled a site that sells some.
When I get my mask back and get some other things sorted, I'll be (Hopefuly) getting some backer rod and trying various methods of making it look like dreads.

"PLASTI-KOTE PAINT" IS A BRAND NAME & WILL NEVER COME ANYWHERE NEAR THE SAME RESULTS!!!

DO NOT be fooled just because it begins w/ the same "PLASTI" word!!! The difference being that Plasti-Dip is a colored liquid rubber-like material & Plasti-kote is just a brand name of paint that will stick to HARD plastic surfaces, not foam. If u use ANY kind of paint, no matter what brand of paint u use for the dreads, it will flake off.
When I first made my suit, I tried dozens of different paints, brands, types & application techniques (scoring the full dread length, brushing & spraying on in the VERY lightest possible coats imaginable) attempting to find something that'd work. The ONLY kind of paint which eventually gave me somewhat satisfactory results was from a VINYL-BASED SPRAY PAINT in the form of a CAN OF SPRAY PAINT USED SPECIFICALLY FOR VINYL REPAIR. It had good adhesion qualities which allowed it to bend & flex w/ the dreads once dry, although some small areas DID eventually start to flake off due to the dreads brushing up against each other but overall, it did work. If for any reason u cannot get anything close to the Plasti-Dip stuff, I'd recommend the vinyl repair spray paint. Keep in mind, its not the best method, but it'll work ok...just be warned, when spraying it on, do 2-3 extremely light coats & do it in a VERY WELL VENTILATED AREA because vinyl repair spray paint has one of the worst smelling paint odors ever!!!

I am currently looking into suppliers of backer rod to non commercial users at the moment and will let you know how things pan out.

Bovine mate, very generous offer, I think customs would pounce upon it, they tend to check most chemical based prosducts. I had a few FX orders from the US come through a while back and the customs had rummaged through it all...

Good news gents. I can do 1/4" - 7/8" for .25 cents a foot, 1" .28 cents a foot, and 1 1/4" for .30 cents a foot not shipped. Which means by rough calculations you could do a set of dreads (40) for @ 34.00 (backer rod at 36" lengths each) not shipped. Lair price only! Trying to help my fellow hunters here. Thats pretty good bargain/budget dreads. If anyone needs the stuff let me know and I'll get it to my shop.

I posted in another thread that this rod CAN be tapered to look like a more natural dread as apposed to just a tube. It takes a bit of time, but if I was gonna go the backer route, tapering is how I`d do it. If ya don`t taper, the dreads of backer are too stiff imho, and do not swing naturally. Just a headsup.

It is easy to do. I used a 16 inch x 4 inch tablemounted belt sander. And the dread I did this with was a 24 inch piece of backer rod. Ya hold the end that goes into the head, all the while slowly rotating the rod so it sands, basicly like sharpening a big pencil. You`ll get the idea. I posted a pic in the olde Lair, but I don`t think it was archived.

Once I was done, it was like a soft foam with open cells, I then used a heatgun to carefully close the cells again. After that, I painted it black with a stay flexible black spraypaint in a can. Like auto upholstery stuff. Easy to find. It swung nice with the 3 rings on it. If I didn `t decide to go with Booies dreads, I would have used this method to make mine.

I saw awhile back that sob on ebay is selling the same stuff I am offerinf for $65.00!!!!! What a rip off. After reworking the numbers I think I can do it even cheaper than I thought. Depends on how bad the shipping is from the distributor. Just FYI.
