Iron Man Mkiii Animatronic Suit

Here's a project I've been working on for a friend- a full animatronic Iron Man suit with opening helmet (wireless), shoulder rockets, forearem missile, moving back flaps, repulsors and sound effects. The suit is fiberglass and was made by RPF member Finhead- I'm just adding all the electronics/mechanics. As always, when I'm done I'll have a complete build tutorial with materials, schematics, code, etc. Working like mad right now to try and finish this up in time for the new movie.

Enjoy!

You wouldn't want to get your cheeks in the way of that helmet snapping shut lol. Looking forward to the finished piece.

It's not a problem- the lid is nowhere near your face when it closes. The biggest issue is with the location of the hinge points inside the helmet, which are near your temples. The helmet is very narrow in this area (depending on the size of your head) so when the links move that lift the face plate up it tends to rub a bit. While it's fine to wear for a little while it's not something I'd want to wear for hours at a Con. As a result of this I have redesigned the hinge mechanism- it's now simpler and lighter and has a lot more clearance. The chin and face plate also can now move independent of each other.

Killer job man,may want to have you do my Finhead MarkIII helmet
I can do that. :)

I'll have a separate helmet tutorial up soon- it'll include both wired and wireless operation so you can build it either way. The Finhead helmets are really nice- the shape is just perfect and they're light weight too. The fit on the one I'm working on is very good. The new hinge system I've devised gets rid of most of his mechanism and simplifies it greatly while adding more room in the helmet by getting rid of the Chicago screws that hold the links. It's a bit of work to do but it's really clean and reduces a lot of friction in the system. In the tutorial I'll show how to convert any resin or fiberglass helmet to this linkage system- I don't think it'll work on foam helmets.

awesome work. the helmet closing that fast would make me flinch every time it closed. LOL. can't wait to see it all done.

Here's a shot of the eyes lit up-

Here's a block diagram that shows how everything is connected for the right hand-

So here's a little something extra. Just finished this helmet for a friend. Unlike the previous wireless version I made this uses a push button to open and close the helmet. Push once to open and then push again to close. Since this helmet was a for a display only (and not to be worn) the owner requested a specific lighting sequence involving the eyes and a red LED inside the helmet. Once the helmet is painted only the eyes will light up- light is leaking through the fiberglass casting.

When I post the helmet tutorial I'll show how do to the wireless setup as well as a push button setup like this. With the push button setup you can have all of the electronics in the helmet or you make the battery and activation button external- just run a wire down to your finger or gauntlet.

Going to tweak the code just a bit to have the chin open up a bit sooner...

I have never been good at animatronics or designing wiring, so this is an informative read, thanks for posting it!  Great craftsmanship too, looks boss!
