this is only one way to make a good two part mold
sculpt, arm, leg, head, armor. the arm is oil base clay the walls are water base clay but the arms can be wed clay

P8280018.jpg

think of good mold lines, a mock up of wood will help keep the clay flat

P8290019.jpg

rough out the clay wall

P8290020.jpg

go back and make clean sharp flat edges

P8290021.jpg

its time for keys, think about it stone wont bend if the keys lockup when you try to open the mold it will brake.
its time to spray a clear sealer over all the clay
ps look at the wrist its the pour spout

P8290022.jpg

mix the stone and smooth it on be careful not to get air bubbles the first layer, it will be 3/8"thick let it jell

P8290024.jpg

mix more stone and add moist hemp to build up mass
let jell and more stone to make a nice finish the mold will be
1 1/4"to 1 1/2" thick.

once dry flip it over clean out the clay and trim the sides

the next job is to make a thin layer of clay about 1/8" thick keep at least 3/8" away from the arm and stay out of the keys
this part will make a very tight seam.
spray with clear sealer, and petroleum jelly on the stone and make the outher side

now the fun will start the fiber glass arm you started with will be the core
core???
yes after the latex skin is poured put the core back in the mold and fill with foam.
the best arms you will ever have

How does this help? I never heard of doing this when making a 2 part Ultra Cal 30 mold of any oil based clay sculpts. I always thought it was just a matter of making a strong two part mold to get a good seam line. Ultra Cal doesn't shrink like plaster right?

its old school from the days of foam latex
this is the method I used to get a fine edge on the appliance,
but you must be careful not to chip the edge
